The brief was to replace a rear bathroom extension that blocked garden views from the hallway and kitchen and to transform the kitchen. New living room double doors and a garden door improve access, ventilation and light to the refurbished kitchen. The layout is designed to accommodate a long table for 12-14 people, made possible by an existing niche that houses recessed seating with a mirror and storage above

The new extension has an irregular compact plan and flat zinc roof to maintain views of the garden from the existing ground floor rooms and stair landing. The solid portion conceals a walk in shower bathroom while the south and east facing glazed portion provides views of the garden from the hall and front door. A plywood seat and deep brick sill allow the morning sun to be enjoyed both inside and outside. The external insulation of the extension is protected by brick slips at low level and painted green above and is connected to the existing house by matching brick steps and a brick slip surround to the new garden door.
