The brief was to refurbish a bungalow that had been poorly laid out with a dark interior. The existing external walls and roof were insulated and the inside completely reconfigured. The end of terrace bungalow is located on a very small site surrounded by higher ground that blocks out a significant amount of south light.
A new tall gable window floods the centre of the house with south light at high level through a four metre high volume that extends the entire depth of the house, running along the full length of the kitchen into the stair landing.
The stairs to the converted back attic is in a new double height volume from which all the spaces in the house are accesed. In addition to the light scoop, two rooflights to the stairwell space increase the daylight in the centre of the house on both levels. The living space is divided from the kitchen by an island with raised edges to screen the kitchen sink and provide a coffee bar counterCuas Solais
