The bungalow originally contained living spaces that were poorly laid out and badly lit due to a series of disconnected extensions. To transform and upgrade the accomodation in a cost effective way, the existing building envelope was retained and refurbished while the inside was completely reorganised and the attic converted.
The existing front entrance is reserved for formal visitors while the side ‘back’ entrance is the main one used by family and friends. This entrance doubles as a utility room and leads into the the important kitchen-dining space. This is placed along the south facing side gable of the house to benefit from the warm light and to maximise the views of the rear, side and front gardens.
At the heart of the house is a four metre high barrel vaulted living room carved out of the rear attic. The entrance hall end consists of a solid fuel stove inglenook while the garden end opens into both the dining area and garden through double doors. A timber wall in the hall screens a secret attic stair.Boghta Maireachtála
