A large bright comfortable space is needed for the daily activities of a large family. It also acts as a gathering space for large groups of extended family and friends. When a concealed screen and projector are revealed the space becomes a screening room. Concealed storage and a lobbied wc are located down one side of the room allowing the creation of a south facing clerestorey light well set back from the site boundary.
The room extends 8.6 x 3.6 m into a 36 m long garden. The 2.75 m high room is washed on its edges with light from 4 sides. The dining area has openings to the courtyard, the kitchen and the clerestorey light well over the piano. The living area has a folded garden facing screen and a roof light with blinds along the middle of the room. A new stepped entrance between the kitchen return and the front tv and sitting rooms completes the enfilade of ground floor rooms.
A polished white terrazzo floor bounces light upwards and with the smooth ceiling a provides a contrast with the uneven finish of the painted brick and timber walls. The timber slats conceal two service doors and the projector hatch. Along with the brick they also soften the acoustics of the room. A folded plaster ceiling conceals a drop down screen on one side and up lighting on the other three sides
